The Short of It

I am currently an Associate Professor of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. I work in the Center for Theoretical Physics, focusing my research on the Large Hadron Collider experiment at CERN. Once upon a time I played tenor sax, but I switched to upright bass when I found out that “String Theory” was going to revolutionize particle physics.

We boost one another. We communicate with words, actions, and images that inspire greatness, and we avoid those that might make others uncomfortable. We engage in spirited and lively discussions, and we treat each other with respect and consideration. We welcome and mentor newcomers, encourage novel ideas and constructive debate, and support inter-experimental and theory-experiment dialogue and collaboration. We strongly value our diverse backgrounds and talents, a…

I'm interested in working in your research group. Where do I sign up?

There is some information about joining my group. If you have further questions, send me an email.

Do you respond to generic emails asking to come to MIT?

Yes, I try to, but I typically just send stock emails. Like this one, for a prospective Ph.D. student:

Biography

Jesse Thaler is a theoretical particle physicist who fuses techniques from quantum field theory and machine learning to address outstanding questions in fundamental physics. His current research is focused on maximizing the discovery potential of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) through new theoretical frameworks and novel data analysis techniques. Prof. Thaler is an expert in jets, which are collimated sprays of particles that are copiously produced at the LHC, and he studies the su…

Previous Overview

From the discovery of the W and Z bosons in 1983 to the most recent measurements taken at the Tevatron, the Standard Model of particle physics has survived two decades of precision tests. But starting in 2008, particle physicists will probe new phenomena at the high energy frontier with the
